Board of trustees
GAWF currently has 6 experienced trustees who contribute voluntarily to all aspects of our work.
Brian Cowie (Chair)
Lily Venizelos
Lily Venizelos is the founder and President of MEDASSET – Mediterranean Association to Save the Sea Turtles – an international NGO working for the study and conservation of sea turtles and their habitats throughout the Mediterranean, through scientific research, environmental education, political lobbying and raising public awareness.
In 1987, she received one of the first ‘Global 500’ Awards from UNEP in Nairobi and has received various other awards and distinctions since. From 1983 she single-handedly campaigned worldwide to raise awareness of the plight of the loggerhead sea turtles nesting in Laganas Bay, on the island of Zakynthos, Greece. As a result, legislation was passed and the area was established as a National Marine Park in 1999.
Anna Stamatiou
Anna Stamatiou was born in London in 1955, of Greek parents. She recently moved to Athens after more than 50 years in London, and maintaining her connection with GAWF has been an important link to her previous life. She is a founder member of an environmental group dedicated to the conservation of the wildlife of a group of Aegean islands, and is also a supporter of MEDASSET and MOm (for the Mediterranean monk seal). She owns (or perhaps, more accurately, is owned by) two English bull terriers, and travels regularly to London.
Morgan McSweeney
Morgan is a Communications Consultant, who recently joined GAWF. Originally from Cork, Ireland he now lives in London. Morgan owned dogs, cats and even a donkey when he grew up in rural Ireland. Unfortunately he finds it impossible to care for a pet in London. Morgan has supported animal charities in the past but joined GAWF because of their clear and focused vision.
Morgan said “What GAWF does is very impressive, there are other worthy organisations to support animals but I have never come across one that is so effective in delivering real improvements the way GAWF does.”
Imogen Walker
Imogen is an actor and local politician who lives in Lambeth, South London with her dog Otto. She grew up in the countryside outside Stirling, Scotland with many much-loved pets, and she has been an animal lover all her life. Having studied Philosophy at Edinburgh University, she trained at Drama Studio London and has appeared in shows such as Taggart and Doctors on television as well as numerous stage and film appearances.
